The History of Steel City
The City of Coatesville was nicknamed "Steel City" after Lukens, Inc., a steel mill started in the 1800s by Charles Lukens. As his company grew and prospered, so did the City of Coatesville. In the last decade, the company has changed hands, however, the pride of "Steel City" lives on through the spirit of competition in our invitational.
The Steel City Invitational Cross-Country Meet has been a Coatesville tradition since 1965, with the first elite boys' varsity runners/programs. In 1975, the first elite girls' varsity race was held. Without fail, this meet has been held for the elite boys'/girls' varsity runners the first Saturday of October ever since.
